Miller Cycle – The Heart of the Matter

Most petrol engines operate on the Otto cycle, where compression ratio equals expansion ratio. This limits thermal efficiency because increasing compression to extract more work also increases the risk of engine knock.

The Miller cycle solves this problem by keeping the intake valve open longer during the compression stroke. This creates a "late intake valve closing" effect, resulting in an expansion ratio that is greater than the compression ratio. The engine can extract more work from the combustion process while the effective compression ratio remains lower – reducing knock tendency and enabling a higher geometric compression ratio.

Lighter, Stronger, Smarter

The development team pursued lightweighting from two angles: structural design and material selection. The cast-iron block was replaced with an aluminium alloy block. The cylinder head integrates the exhaust manifold. Hollow camshafts replaced solid ones, sodium-filled hollow valves were adopted, and plastic cylinder head covers and intake manifolds were introduced.

The result? Overall engine weight reduced by 10%- – without compromising strength or durability.

Two-Stage Variable Valve Lift (VVL) – available on the high-power HY4N20A variant – takes efficiency a step further. VVL optimises valve lift according to engine speed, improving low-speed fuel economy and high-speed power performance simultaneously.
