ED R&D Platform – China's First Diesel Engine Launched with a Pickup Truck

A Different Kind of Powertrain

Most discussions about high-efficiency engines focus on petrol. But for customers who need torque, durability, and fuel economy above all else – for work vehicles, off-road adventures, and heavy-duty applications – diesel remains the undisputed choice.

The ED R&D Platform from GWM addresses exactly this need. It is China's first diesel engine platform launched alongside a production pickup truck – and it has since become the dominant force in China's diesel pickup market.

The ED platform is one of six engine families developed by GWM's powertrain division, alongside the EG, EC, EB, EN, and EZ platforms. It is a dedicated four-cylinder diesel platform manufactured at GWM's Chongqing facility, which employs over 1,100 people and produces EC (4-cylinder petrol), ED (4-cylinder diesel), and EZ (6-cylinder petrol) engine families. The ED platform delivers high performance, high economy, and high reliability-, meeting China State VIb emission standards-.

But what truly sets it apart is its real-world track record – and its remarkable quietness.

The HY4D20M – A"China Heart"Winner

The ED platform's flagship 2.0T diesel engine, designated HY4D20M, is the engine that changed China's diesel pickup market.

It has received the prestigious"China Heart"Top Ten Engine award-- – a recognition it earned through a combination of power, efficiency, and refinement that was previously unseen in the domestic diesel pickup segment. The HY4D20M is widely recognised as one of the best diesel engines for Chinese pickup trucks, excelling in both quietness and power performance.

As one industry review noted: “"The HY4D20M engine is a 2.0T diesel power unit independently developed by Great Wall Motor. It is known for its fuel economy, outstanding quietness, and reliable quality".

Core Technologies – What Makes It Different?

1. Exceptional NVH Performance – “Quieter Than a Conversation”

Diesel engines have traditionally been associated with noise and vibration. The ED platform changes that perception entirely.

The GHY4D20M achieves idle noise levels as low as 46.6 decibels – quieter than normal human conversation. This is a remarkable achievement for a diesel engine and one of the key reasons it has been so widely adopted in consumer-oriented pickups. The platform's NVH performance is described as "surpassing"(beyond its class), making it suitable not just for work vehicles but also for family-oriented SUV and pickup applications.

2. High-Pressure Common Rail Fuel System

The HY4D20M employs a 2000 Bar electronically controlled high-pressure common rail system. This system enables multiple fuel injections per cycle, improving fuel atomisation and combustion efficiency-. The result is more complete combustion, lower emissions, and better fuel economy.

3. VGT (Variable Geometry Turbocharger)

The engine features a VGT variable geometry turbocharger – a technology that adjusts the turbine geometry to optimise boost pressure across the entire rev range. This delivers strong low-end torque for off-road and hauling applications, while maintaining efficient high-speed operation on highways.

4. Class-Leading Torque

The HY4D20M delivers up to 400 N·m of peak torque – a figure that raised the bar for domestic diesel pickups when it was introduced-. This torque is available from as low as 1,400–1,500 rpm, providing immediate pulling power for heavy loads, steep grades, and off-road conditions-.

5. Low Fuel Consumption

The ED platform achieves a minimum brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) of just 200 g/kW·h【PPT†L18】- – an outstanding figure for a production diesel engine. In real-world applications, vehicles powered by the HY4D20M achieve fuel consumption as low as 7.6 L/100km for two-wheel-drive models and 7.9 L/100km for four-wheel-drive models. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) rating is 8.5–9.0 L/100km.

The 2.4T Upgrade – HY4D24

Building on the success of the 2.0T, the ED platform introduced the HY4D24 2.4T diesel engine as a high-performance upgrade.

The 2.4T delivers 135 kW of power and 480 N·m of torque- – making it the highest-torque single-turbo diesel engine in the Chinese pickup market. It incorporates a VGT variable geometry turbocharger and an in-cylinder direct injection system with pressures up to 2000 Bar. Paired with GWM's self-developed 9-speed automatic transmission, the 2.4T offers smoother gear ratios than the previous 8-speed ZF unit and a top speed of 165 km/h.

The 2.4T is positioned for high-end pickups, SUVs, and light commercial vehicles, and has been adopted in models such as the GWM Poer 2.4T and Tank 300 diesel-.

Market Leadership – By the Numbers

The HY4D20M is not just a successful engine – it is the market leader in its segment.

In the first ten months of 2023 alone, 103,194 vehicles equipped with the HY4D20M were sold in China – more than the next four diesel engines combined. This represents a 77% share of the diesel pickup engine market. The engine is used across GWM's entire pickup lineup, including the Cannon (Poer), Fengjun 5, Fengjun 7, and King Kong Cannon, with different power calibrations to differentiate models.

Beyond GWM's own vehicles, the HY4D20M is also supplied to third-party manufacturers – a testament to its quality and competitiveness. The engine has been adopted in models such as the ZTE 1986 pickup and the Changan Hunter pickup.

The ED platform's success is not limited to China. HY4D20M-powered vehicles are exported to markets including Australia, Russia, South Africa, and Europe, demonstrating the platform's ability to meet international standards and customer expectations.

Reliability – Tested Beyond Standards

The HY4D20M has earned its reputation for reliability through exceptionally rigorous testing.

Every reliability test for the HY4D20M was conducted at 20% to 50% above Chinese national standards. This commitment to over-engineering has resulted in an engine that is proven through long-term market use and has earned not only the"China Heart"award but also the China Quality Association Science and Technology Innovation Award.

As one industry observer summarised: “The HY4D20M engine is reliable, quiet, and dedicated to providing users with stronger power and higher driving comfort”.
