EZ R&D platform- Chinese first independent dual turbocharged V6 Gasoline engine
EZ R&D Platform – China‘s First Independently Developed Twin-Turbo V6 Engine
The Flagship That Defies the Electric Era
In an industry racing toward electrification, why would anyone invest in developing a new 3.0-litre V6 engine?
The answer lies in a simple truth: there are applications where nothing less than six cylinders will do. For full-size SUVs, luxury off-road vehicles, heavy-duty pickups, and motorhomes, torque, durability, and refinement remain paramount – and a V6 delivers these in ways that smaller engines simply cannot replicate.
The EZ R&D Platform from GWM answers exactly this need. It is China's first independently developed twin-turbo V6 gasoline engine – a flagship powerplant that stands as a testament to GWM's engineering ambition. Developed under the internal designation 6Z30 (external supply version: HY6Z30), this engine represents the pinnacle of GWM's combustion engine development.
And it has been recognized accordingly. The 6Z30 engine received the "China Heart"2022 Annual Top Ten Engine and Hybrid System award – a remarkable achievement in an era when electrification dominates the conversation.
What Makes This Engine Different?
1. A True V6 – 60-Degree Architecture
The 6Z30 features a 60-degree V-angle with a displacement of 2,993 cc. The 60-degree configuration is inherently balanced, reducing the shear forces on the crankshaft and delivering superior smoothness compared to other V-angle designs. This is the architecture of choice for premium V6 engines worldwide.
2. Aggressive Low-End Torque – Built for Off-Road
The 6Z30 delivers 340 N·m of torque at just 1,000 rpm– a figure that makes it exceptionally capable in low-speed off-road scenarios such as rock crawling and hill climbing. Peak torque of 500 N·m is achieved from 1,500 rpm and sustained through 4,500 rpm.
3. 48V Mild-Hybrid Integration
Every 6Z30 engine is equipped with a 48V BSG (Belt-Driven Starter Generator) motor. With mild-hybrid assistance, the system can deliver up to 550 N·m of peak torque.
4. P2 Hybrid Capability
When paired with the 9HAT transmission – which integrates a P2 hybrid motor – the system delivers a combined output of up to 410 kW and 750 N·m of torque--. In production models like the Tank 700 Hi4-T, this P2 hybrid configuration produces 385 kW (517 hp) and 800 N·m of peak torque-.
5. Class-Leading Thermal Efficiency
Despite its performance credentials, the 6Z30 achieves a thermal efficiency of 38.5% – a figure that rivals many smaller, four-cylinder engines. The engine‘s BSFC (Brake Specific Fuel Consumption) reaches as low as 219.6 g/kW·h, with the ≥250 g/kW·h high-efficiency region covering over 70% of the operating map.
6. Exceptional NVH – Premium Refinement
The 6Z30 delivers idle noise as low as 58 dB – a figure that places it in the premium luxury category. Through active excitation source control and high-frequency noise suppression, the engine achieves a minimum 15 dB difference between prominent tones and total sound pressure across all speed ranges. This is the quietest V6 ever produced by a Chinese automaker.
Core Technologies – The Engineering Behind the Power
Dual VGT Turbochargers
The 6Z30 features two Variable Geometry Turbochargers (VGT) with GWM-developed intellectual property. VGT technology – once a"secret weapon"of Porsche – adjusts turbine geometry via electronically controlled actuators to optimise boost pressure across the entire rev range. The result is minimal turbo lag, immediate throttle response, and sustained power delivery.
Dual Injection System (GDI + PFI)
The engine combines 350-bar high-pressure direct injection (GDI) with port fuel injection (PFI) in a dual-injection system. PFI is used during cold starts and light loads to reduce carbon deposits, while GDI takes over under medium-to-high loads for precise fuel delivery. This combination delivers flexible combustion control, knock suppression, and reduced particulate emissions.
Miller Cycle
The 6Z30 employs a deep Miller cycle, where the expansion ratio exceeds the compression ratio. By keeping the intake valve open longer during the compression stroke, the engine reduces pumping losses and extracts more work from each combustion event. This is a key contributor to the engine‘s 38.5% thermal efficiency.
Integrated Water-Cooled Charge Air Cooler
The intake manifold integrates a water-cooled intercooler, which provides more efficient charge air cooling than conventional air-to-air systems. This reduces intake air temperature, increases charge density, and improves combustion efficiency.
Full-Map Variable Displacement Oil Pump
A full-map variable displacement oil pump adjusts oil pressure precisely according to engine speed and load-1-, reducing parasitic losses and improving overall efficiency.
High-Strength Crankshaft and Connecting Rod System
The 6Z30 employs a high-strength crankshaft and connecting rod system with a fatigue safety factor 30% above design standards– a critical feature for an engine intended for extreme off-road and heavy-duty applications.

The 9AT & 9HAT Transmission Pairing
The EZ platform is paired exclusively with GWM's self-developed longitudinal 9-speed automatic transmissions – the 9AT and its hybrid variant, the 9HAT-.
The 9AT features a compact axial dimension of approximately 625 mm and a weight of 90 kg. It offers a speed ratio spread of 8.843 and can handle up to 600 N·m of torque. The transmission incorporates a self-developed electro-hydraulic control module, an efficient and compact clutch module, and a fully lockable torque converter. Gears 7, 8, and 9 are overdrive ratios for optimal fuel efficiency, with 9th gear engaging at approximately 90 km/h in normal driving. Maximum transmission efficiency exceeds 97%.
The 9HAT builds on the 9AT by integrating a high-power P2 hybrid motor, increasing torque capacity to 750 N·m. The P2 motor delivers up to 120–150 kW of power and 330–425 N·m of torque-. The hybrid module adds approximately 90 mm to the axial length and 35 kg to the weight.
Both transmissions feature integrated damper structures for superior NVH performance-, and their control logic was developed entirely in-house by GWM.
